Can't-Wait Wednesday: Lost in the Moment and Found by Seanan McGuire & What Lies in the Woods by Kate Alice Marshall

Can't-Wait is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings that spotlights exciting upcoming releases that we can't wait to be released! This meme is based off of Jill @ Breaking the Spine's Waiting on Wednesday meme.

This week, we're diving in early to take a peek at some of January's upcoming releases!
This week's upcoming book spotlights are:

Lost in the Moment and Found (Wayward Children #8) by Seanan McGuire
Publication: January 10th, 2023
Tordotcom
Hardcover. 160 pages.

Pre-order: Amazon | Bookshop.org

From Goodreads:
"Welcome to the Shop Where the Lost Things Go.

If you ever lost a sock, you’ll find it here.
If you ever wondered about favorite toy from childhood... it’s probably sitting on a shelf in the back.
And the headphones that you swore that this time you’d keep safe? You guessed it….

Antoinette has lost her father. Metaphorically. He’s not in the shop, and she’ll never see him again. But when Antsy finds herself lost (literally, this time), she finds that however many doors open for her, leaving the Shop for good might not be as simple as it sounds.

And stepping through those doors exacts a price.

Lost in the Moment and Found tells us that childhood and innocence, once lost, can never be found."
I have found that the books in this series can be a little hit or miss sometimes at this point, but I'm always so excited to read the new installments, and Lost in the Moment and Found sounds very promising! I love diving into McGuire's seemingly boundless imagination.

What Lies in the Woods by Kate Alice Marshall
Publication: January 17th, 2023
Flatiron
Hardcover. 336 pages.

Pre-order: Amazon | Bookshop.org

From Goodreads:
"They were eleven when they sent a killer to prison . . . They were heroes . . . but they were liars.

Naomi Shaw used to believe in magic. Twenty-two years ago, she and her two best friends, Cassidy and Olivia, spent the summer roaming the woods, imagining a world of ceremony and wonder. They called it the Goddess Game. The summer ended suddenly when Naomi was attacked. Miraculously, she survived her seventeen stab wounds and lived to identify the man who had hurt her. The girls’ testimony put away a serial killer, wanted for murdering six women. They were heroes.

And they were liars.

For decades, the friends have kept a secret worth killing for. But now Olivia wants to tell, and Naomi sets out to find out what really happened in the woods—no matter how dangerous the truth turns out to be."
I've really enjoyed what I've read from Kate Alice Marshall so far, and although I'm behind on a couple of her releases, I'm really looking forward to this one now as well!

Can't-Wait Wednesday: Wayward (Wanderers #2) by Chuck Wendig, The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean, & These Fleeting Shadows by Kate Alice Marshall

From Goodreads:
**Synopsis contains spoilers for Wanderers, book #1!***
"Five years ago, ordinary Americans fell under the grip of a strange new malady that caused them to sleepwalk across the country to a destination only they knew. They were followed on their quest by the shepherds: friends and family who gave up everything to protect them.
Their secret destination: Ouray, a small town in Colorado that would become one of the last outposts of civilization. Because the sleepwalking epidemic was only the first in a chain of events that led to the end of the world--and the birth of a new one.
The survivors, sleepwalkers and shepherds alike, have a dream of rebuilding human society. Among them are Benji, the scientist struggling through grief to lead the town; Marcy, the former police officer who wants only to look after the people she loves; and Shana, the teenage girl who became the first shepherd--and an unlikely hero whose courage will be needed again.
Because the people of Ouray are not the only survivors, and the world they are building is fragile. The forces of cruelty and brutality are amassing under the leadership of self-proclaimed president Ed Creel. And in the very heart of Ouray, the most powerful survivor of all is plotting its own vision for the new world: Black Swan, the A.I. who imagined the apocalypse.
Against these threats, Benji, Marcy, Shana, and the rest have only one hope: one another. Because the only way to survive the end of the world is together."
I absolutely loved Wanderers and can barely describe how excited I was when I saw that there would be a sequel after all! I can't wait to see what the follow up is going to be to all of the crazy events of the previous book.

The Book EatersThe Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean
Publication: August 2nd, 2022
Tor Books
Hardcover. 304 pages.

Pre-order: Amazon | Bookshop.org

From Goodreads:
"Out on the Yorkshire Moors lives a secret line of people for whom books are food, and who retain all of a book's content after eating it. To them, spy novels are a peppery snack; romance novels are sweet and delicious. Eating a map can help them remember destinations, and children, when they misbehave, are forced to eat dry, musty pages from dictionaries.

Devon is part of The Family, an old and reclusive clan of book eaters. Her brothers grow up feasting on stories of valor and adventure, and Devon—like all other book eater women—is raised on a carefully curated diet of fairytales and cautionary stories.

But real life doesn't always come with happy endings, as Devon learns when her son is born with a rare and darker kind of hunger—not for books, but for human minds."
This premise is so ridiculously intriguing to me and I am so curious about how Sunyi Dean executes it! I'm actually just starting the audiobook, and so far so good–can't wait to get into it more.

These Fleeting ShadowsThese Fleeting Shadows by Kate Alice Marshall

From Goodreads:
"Helen Vaughan doesn't know why she and her mother left their ancestral home at Harrowstone Hall, called Harrow, or why they haven't spoken to their extended family since. So when her grandfather dies, she's shocked to learn that he has left everything—the house, the grounds, and the money—to her. The inheritance comes with one condition: she must stay on the grounds of Harrow for one full year, or she'll be left with nothing.

There is more at stake than money. For as long as she can remember, Harrow has haunted Helen's dreams—and now those dreams have become a waking nightmare. Helen knows that if she is going to survive the year, she needs to uncover the secrets of Harrow. Why is the house built like a labyrinth? What is digging the holes that appear in the woods each night? And why does the house itself seem to be making her sick?

With each twisted revelation, Helen questions what she knows about Harrow, her family, and even herself. She no longer wonders if she wants to leave…but if she can."
I didn't expect to love Kate Alice Marshall's Rules for Vanishing when I read it last year, but I ended up really, really enjoying it and I'm so glad to see she has another creepy-sounding story coming out!

Can't-Wait Wednesday: Rules for Vanishing by Kate Alice Marshall & Imaginary Friend by Stephen Chbosky

Can't-Wait is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings that spotlights exciting upcoming releases that we can't wait to be released! This meme is based off of Jill @ Breaking the Spine's Waiting on Wednesday meme.

This week's upcoming book spotlights are:

Rules For Vanishing
Rules for Vanishing by Kate Alice Marshall
Publication: September 24th, 2019
Viking Books
Hardcover. 416 pages.

"In the faux-documentary style of The Blair Witch Project comes the campfire story of a missing girl, a vengeful ghost, and the girl who is determined to find her sister--at all costs.

Once a year, the path appears in the forest and Lucy Gallows beckons. Who is brave enough to find her--and who won't make it out of the woods?

It's been exactly one year since Sara's sister, Becca, disappeared, and high school life has far from settled back to normal. With her sister gone, Sara doesn't know whether her former friends no longer like her...or are scared of her, and the days of eating alone at lunch have started to blend together. When a mysterious text message invites Sara and her estranged friends to "play the game" and find local ghost legend Lucy Gallows, Sara is sure this is the only way to find Becca--before she's lost forever. And even though she's hardly spoken with them for a year, Sara finds herself deep in the darkness of the forest, her friends--and their cameras--following her down the path. Together, they will have to draw on all of their strengths to survive. The road is rarely forgiving, and no one will be the same on the other side."
This sounds so spooky and I think it'll be a perfect fall read. I love nothing more than a dark, creepy forest setting and this sounds like it'll fit that idea nicely.

Imaginary Friend
Imaginary Friend by Stephen Chbosky
Publication: October 1st, 2019
Grand Central Publishing
Hardcover. 720 pages.

"We can swallow our fear or let our fear swallow us.

Single mother Kate Reese is on the run. Determined to improve life for her and her son, Christopher, she flees an abusive relationship in the middle of the night with Christopher at her side. Together, they find themselves drawn to the tight-knit community of Mill Grove, Pennsylvania. It's as far off the beaten track as they can get. Just one highway in, one highway out.

At first, it seems like the perfect place to finally settle down. Then Christopher vanishes. For six awful days, no one can find him. Until Christopher emerges from the woods at the edge of town, unharmed but not unchanged. He returns with a voice in his head only he can hear, with a mission only he can complete: Build a tree house in the woods by Christmas, or his mother and everyone in the town will never be the same again.

Soon Kate and Christopher find themselves in the fight of their lives, caught in the middle of a war playing out between good and evil, with their small town as the battleground."
Another extremely chilling-sounding read! I am so ready for all of these weird, spooky books. I'm most intrigued since this seems like quite a departue for Chbosky content-wise. I can't wait to have a chance to check it out!
